Discover Italy: A Book A Day (4 week study)

$16.00

Just thinking of Italy awakens all the senses, conjuring up images of glorious Renaissance art and architecture, sounds of wondrous music and language, and the smells and tastes of delicious food.

“Discover Italy: A Book A Day” is a 4-week cultural study for ages 3 to 11, bringing you through the cities of Venice, Florence, Pisa, Assisi, Rome, Naples, Pompeii, Taranto, Calabria, Syracuse, and the islands of Sicily and Sardinia. Maps and Timeline Cards orient you geographically and through history as you dive into each story.

Fascinating stories abound about the creation of the first fortepiano, the attempts to correct the Leaning Tower of Pisa, and the wonders of Fibonacci numbers in nature.

Learn how to cook a perfect pot of pasta and grab my family’s secret recipe for Neapolitan pizza dough. Familiar tales about Strega Nona as well as the story of the first Margherita pizza will inspire the youngest chefs to lend a helping hand.

A little more than one book a day, 29 picture books are highly recommended, with additional book lists for further exploration and 9 wonderful chapter books. Many of the books are free to read online at archive.org.

This 71 page unit provides you with 1 (or 2) daily book review(s) along with carefully curated videos and activities that cover geography, art, STEM, language arts, cooking, and music. The stats: 10 biographies, 3 art prints, 4 art projects, 3 music activities, 4 recipes, 3 STEM activities, and a special highlight for Italian-American author Tomie dePaola and his many books set in Italy.

You will receive two digital PDF downloads. This is not a physical product. The two files consist of: “Discover Italy: A Book A Day” and a special passport booklet.

*Italy Unit Updated March 2024

Learn about the geography of different countries through literature. Written in an open-and-go format, this study uses multiple living picture books to learn about Italy. Many of the books are written by own voices or people with strong ties to the country.

The books and activities are interdisciplinary, covering multiple subjects during the course of the study. In a manner similar to unit studies, different subjects are covered that all relate to Italy.

This geography curriculum is written as a non-religious study. This gives families the flexibility to view it through the lens of their own religious worldviews as they see fit. Religions and religious beliefs of people in the country are discussed, specifically the holidays of Christmas and Easter.

Many of the activities follow a Charlotte Mason approach. These activities include: living stories, copywork, map drawing, art study, and composer study.

Whether you read about Italy in the news or know someone from the country, my hope is that this study provides a cultural immersion for your students that they will always remember.
