Africa in Miniature

I can’t decide if I enjoy researching and learning more about new-to-me countries or those I know a little about already. One thing I know for sure: I’d love to see Cameroon someday! The diversity of this country is simply stunning. The nations of Africa are understudied despite the living books that are available. Let’s stop treating the whole of Africa as if it’s all the same.

Did you know that the country of Cameroon are all the climates found in Africa? That’s why it’s nicknamed “Africa in Miniature.” We learned all about the various biomes and the history of Cameroon, including the Atlantic slave trade.

“Discover Cameroon” is a 7-day study that features 8 diverse books. (Seven of those books are free to access online!) Science connections include a biography about environmentalist Tantoh Nforba, a study about the catenary arch, and a water filtration experiment.

How the study works

Cook the national dish, Ndolé and learn about the history that includes the slave trade, colonization, and independence. Each day, read a short paragraph of background information, a book recommendation, a short video to watch, and a suggested activity. Map and flag drawing round out this study of Cameroon!
