Discover Mali: A Book A Day (2 week study)

$8.00

In the midst of our learning and memory-making, we decided that a portion of the sales from this unit will be donated to the wonderful programs in healthcare and education at Ko-Falen Cultural Center in Bamako, Mali.

“Discover Mali: A Book A Day” guides you through a 2-week (10 day) study, using beautiful living books that include stories of daily life, elephant migration, folklore, and biographies. Each daily book study is enhanced by a carefully chosen video and activity, such as map drawing or painting bògòlan-inspired designs.

Find out who the wealthiest king in history was and where the largest mud-brick structure is located! An original, edible mud-brick project makes a sweet treat and memory. Additionally, try a science experiment and two recipes using millet, a staple grain in West Africa.

The subjects explored include geography, culture, science, biography, folk art, history, animal science, cooking, language art, and music. Listen to contemporary musicians and learn from the books and videos of Malian artist Baba Wagué Diakité. The rich cultural history of West Africa covers the Mali Empire until the Atlantic slave trade. Mapwork and Timeline cards are included.

This 32-page study presents organized book reviews, links, worksheets, and activity instructions. This is not a physical product; you will receive two digital PDF files to download. The two files consist of: “Discover Mali: A Book A Day,” and a special passport booklet. The books are not included; however, the six books that are free to read at archive.org are noted.

Learn about the geography of different countries through literature. Written in an open-and-go format, this study uses multiple living picture books to learn about Mali. Many of the books are written by own voices or people with strong ties to the country.

The books and activities are interdisciplinary, covering multiple subjects during the course of the study. In a manner similar to unit studies, different subjects are covered that all relate to Mali.

This geography curriculum is written as a non-biased, non-religious study. This gives families the flexibility to view it through the lens of their own religious worldviews as they see fit. Religions and religious beliefs of people in the country may be discussed.

Many of the activities follow a Charlotte Mason approach. These activities include: living stories, copywork, map drawing, art study, and composer study.

Whether you read about Mali in the news or know someone from the country, my hope is that this study provides a cultural immersion for your students that they will always remember.
