Top Ten: Taiwan

$6.00

Maybe you’ve heard about Taiwan in the news and wondered…where is it? Is that where you’re from (yes!) What’s special about it? (so much!) Come find out all about the beautiful island of Taiwan!

In “Top Ten: Taiwan,” I’ve chosen 10 of the best picture books about Taiwan and added selected short videos to so that you can experience Taiwan from home. (Caution: it might make you want to travel there!) I’ve also recommended activities, recipes, and discussion questions throughout the study.

You’ll learn about:

  • Ecology: interesting plants including the famous Ali Shan tea
  • Geography: are there any active volcanoes?
  • Food: not just boba tea
  • Landmarks: do you know what the world’s highest structure was from 2004-2010?
  • And more!… animals, art, music, holidays, history, and Aboriginal people groups of Taiwan.

Map work, Flag Info, and a special Passport Book are included, as with every A Book A Day study. In the passport book are special country insert pages where your student can place a passport entry stamp and store their maps, flag drawings, and favorite things they learned about the country. You’ll have a beautiful keepsake memory of your country studies as you travel around the globe!

New to this “Top Ten” format is the addition of graphics that can be colored, cut out and glued into the passport book. And, BONUS, a unique coloring page that ties it all together!

This country study is best for ages 5 to 11 but can be enjoyed by anyone who appreciates picture books! Older students may be interested in the videos marked as “in-depth,” as well as the list of chapter books and graphic novels.

Upon purchase, you will receive two digital PDFs to download. This is not a physical product. The two files consist of: a 20-page country study and a passport booklet.

“Top Ten: Taiwan” is a carefully curated list of 10 picture books, videos, activity suggestions, and discussion questions to cover the subjects of geography, history, art, music, science, language arts, food, and more!

These studies have been used in homeschools, homeschool coops, and classrooms. They work especially well for those who use Unit Studies or educate according to the Charlotte Mason method.

I developed this study with Charlotte Mason’s philosophy in mind, specifically that of learning directly from living books. A living book is a well-written book by a person who has passion for and experience in the subject matter. When researching, I look for books that are written by people from that culture or with a personal knowledge of the culture.

Videos are suggested under the “Dive Deeper” section to provide more details about one or more aspects of the book. Click on the link directly within the PDF on your computer or tablet for the recommended videos and/or articles.

Do I have to buy and read all of the books?

You do not have to buy or even read all of the books. See which are available at your local library or through an interlibrary loan. They may be available to read online at archive.org. Many of the books in this study can be found as Youtube read-alouds.

I encourage you to omit any books, videos, and activities that do not resonate with you or your students. You may also choose to read the books in any order. Older students may make further connections by reading the chapter books..

Do I have to print the whole country study?

You do not have to print the whole thing! In fact, you may only choose to print the worksheets as you need them. This country study is designed for you and your students to learn through reading the books and watching the videos. Suggested activities might add to the learning, depending on your students.
