Discover the Serengeti and Beyond: A Book A Day (1 week study)

$5.00

Where can you find the highest peak in Africa, the world’s largest intact caldera, the largest land mammal migration, and the world’s largest tropical lake?

All of these are found in northern Tanzania, a spectacular region famous for the Serengeti National Park, Mount Kilimanjaro, and the Maasai culture. Come discover this amazing place through the eyes of scientists and Tanzanian authors whose work keeps the culture alive!

“Discover the Serengeti and Beyond: A Book A Day” explores the region of northern Tanzania. A five day suggested schedule of living books, videos, and activities will put Tanzania on your list of must-see places! Each daily book study is enhanced by a carefully chosen video and activity, such as writing poetry, a fun animal fact match-up, or a recipe to make.

In this study, you will be introduced to:

  • Maasai culture and modern day issues
  • the Utendi, a Swahili form of poetry
  • the animals of the Serengeti and Tarangire National Parks
  • Tanzanian Folklore
  • the Wildebeest Migration
  • Ngorongoro Crater
  • the National Dish of Tanzania with recipe
  • Mount Kilimanjaro

Also included is map work and an Author Spotlight. The books are not included; however, six out of nine books are free to read at archive.org. These are noted and linked throughout the study.

This 22-page study presents organized book reviews, links, worksheets, and activity instructions. The information was carefully researched and all sources are included at the end to maintain a high level of scholarship and the utmost transparency. This is not a physical product; you will receive one digital PDF file to download.

Learn about the geography of different countries through literature. Written in an open-and-go format, this study uses multiple living picture books to learn about the country of Tanzania. Many of the books are written by own voices or people with strong ties to the country.

The books and activities are interdisciplinary, covering multiple subjects during the course of the study. In a manner similar to unit studies, different subjects are covered that all relate to Tanzania.

This geography curriculum is written as a non-biased, non-religious study. This gives families the flexibility to view it through the lens of their own religious worldviews as they see fit. Religions and religious beliefs of people in the country may be discussed.

Many of the activities follow a Charlotte Mason approach. These activities may include: living stories, copywork, map drawing, art study, science notebooking, and composer study.

Whether you read about Tanzania in the news or know someone from the country, my hope is that this study provides a cultural immersion for your students that they will always remember.
