Discover New Zealand: A Book A Day (1 week study)

$5.00

Learn about the fascinating country of New Zealand and its unique animals. During this one-week study, you’ll read books about the childhood of Edmund Hillary, watch videos highlighting various cities on both the North and South Islands, and learn the legends behind an important constellation that heralds Matariki, the Māori new year. Matariki was observed as a national holiday on June 24, 2022 for Māori and non-Māori alike.

What is a “kiwi,” exactly? And have you heard of Zealandia yet? Let’s get exploring!

“Discover New Zealand: A Book A Day” is a 1-week cultural study for ages 5 to 13, featuring interesting stories, most of which are appropriate for children younger than 5. Three chapter books and longer stories of scientists in the field round out this study for the older student. Bonus activities include hands-on projects to understand plate tectonics and the seasons of the southern hemisphere.

This 27-page unit provides you with a highly recommended book and short video each day, followed by an activity or two. Subjects covered include geography, language arts, science, drawing, cooking, history, and animal science. Mapwork and Timeline cards are included.

You will receive two digital PDF downloads. This is not a physical product. The two files consist of: “Discover New Zealand: A Book A Day” and a passport booklet with cover and specific insert for this study of New Zealand.

Learn about the geography of different countries through literature. Written in an open-and-go format, this study uses multiple living picture books to learn about New Zealand. Many of the books are written by own voices or people with strong ties to the country.

The books and activities are interdisciplinary, covering multiple subjects during the course of the study. In a manner similar to unit studies, different subjects are covered that all relate to New Zealand.

This geography curriculum is written as a non-biased, non-religious study. This gives families the flexibility to view it through the lens of their own religious worldviews as they see fit. Religions and religious beliefs of people in the country may be discussed.

Many of the activities follow a Charlotte Mason approach. These activities include: living stories, copywork, map drawing, art study, and composer study.

Whether you read about New Zealand in the news or know someone from the country, my hope is that this study provides a cultural immersion for your students that they will always remember.
