What a breathtaking place! Fjords, glaciers, waterfalls, the aurora borealis… such magical words. Norway is filled with abundant legends of trolls!

My Top Booklists
The following are my favorite books for different age groups and categories
Cooking Norwegian Food with Kids
I was not prepared for all the lamb or seafood recipes of Iceland and the Scandinavian countries! Random facts: they like to eat tacos in Norway, and Norwegians love pizza, so much so that a brand-name frozen pizza, “Pizza Grandiosa,” is their unofficial national dish.
Norwegians use a unique waffle iron that makes heart-shaped waffles when separated. I was merely going to cut hearts out of square waffles, but my mother happened to buy a small single-heart waffle iron for my daughter right as we ended our week in Norway! We made Norwegian waffles together. (There are more recipe links and pictures in Recipes by Country: Norway.)
Folk Dance and Music of Norway
- “Akedemipolska” by Swedish composer, Eric Sahlström, features Norwegian Olav LuksengĂ„rd Mjelva on the hardanger fiddle and Swedish Erik Rydvall on the nykelharpa.
- Differences between the Hardanger Fiddle and the violin
- “Lofthusen,” a vosserull, or Norwegian dance, played on the hardanger fiddle
- “Kind of Polska” by the Norwegian group Gjermund Larsen Trio
- Norway Music and Images
Art Project/Handicraft
Rosemaling is a traditional Norwegian folk art. We had been practicing our dry brush techniques, just in time to learn the S and C curves required for rosemaling. Another Scandinavian craft is often found in Norway: the Danish Heart Basket.

- “How to draw Norway’s sights and symbols,” by Melody S. Mis
Movies
We watched Frozen and Frozen 2, which are heavily inspired by Norway’s fjords and Sweden’s ice palace. They are fantastic, and I even prefer the sequel! There is also a Frozen Sing-Along version, just in case you need to learn the words.
