Our previous study of France was filled with so many artists that we didn’t even touch on Picasso, who spent most of his life in France! Since he was born and educated in Spain, I decided that Spain would be our next stop so that we could study Picasso as well as Salvador Dalí, another surrealist art connection to our recent study of Belgian surrealist artist, René Magritte.
Alas, I could barely find anything about Andorra. There is an Andorra book in the “Countries of World” series but I found it too textbook-like to even read it myself.

Cooking Spanish Food with Kids
What’s the best way to get kids to eat new food? Involve them! I had mine take the meat mallet to the pork when I made the Andalusian Fried Pork Rolls. They had a blast and I saved a bit of energy.
Games
Don Quixote is a quick and easy game that we all enjoy. My kids learned it when they were about 6 years old. It’s fun for adults, too–I recently taught it to my mother and sister-in-law!
Alhambra is for ages 8 and up, so I felt my kids were ready to learn it. The tiles are beautiful and each represent a different aspect found at the Alhambra in southern Spain. We have Alhambra, the dice game as well. With the dice rolling, there is less strategy which can be good or bad. The dice game is a completely stand alone game, but if you own both games, there is a combined version that you can play on the back side of the board of the Alhambra dice game.
Movies!
We watched Ferdinand the Bull. Disney has an old, 7-minute short that follows the book, “Ferdinand,” by Munro Leaf. It leaves out the actions of the picadors and banderillas whose jobs it is to provoke and weaken the bull.
We also watched the full length, animated movie, “Ferdinand,” produced by 20th Century Fox in 2018. The movie successfully presented the realities of bull-fighting to children through this film, but that reality is a grim and sobering one. We definitely followed up with some conversations about animal cruelty. According to Humane Society International’s website, bullfighting is still legal and takes place in a few countries, although it is outlawed in other countries and even a few specific cities within Spain. If you have a sensitive child, please pre-watch or read reviews before sitting your child in front of this movie.
