Stories are told that history may be preserved. Have you been searching for a way to teach your students about Ukrainian culture without the present shadow of war? Learn about the culture of Ukraine through folktales, living history books, and people. 20 books are recommended for you to pick and choose from. Some difficult histories are more suitable for older ages and in these cases, alternative book choices are provided for younger students.

In this 10-day study, you will learn about pysanky, the traditional Ukrainian method of egg decoration for spring and Easter. You may be inspired to grow your own sunflowers this summer as you watch videos about it’s life cycle and the process of extracting sunflower oil.

Enjoy traditional music played on the national instrument and learn about orchestral instruments with the famous Ukrainian composer, Sergei Prokofiev. In addition, there are two more spotlights that highlight a Ukrainian artist and an author who has brought Ukrainian stories to the world of children’s literature.

A brief history of the country is touched upon with the flag study, and a few books are recommended to learn about the Holocaust in Ukraine and Chernobyl. Also for older students (ages 9+) is a list of six historical fiction chapter books about the previously mentioned topics as well as the Holodomor, or Great Famine.

Also included are:

  • Three art projects
  • Music activity
  • Copywork
  • Recipe for Borscht
  • Map and Flag Drawing
  • Art Study
  • Timeline Cards
  • Passport Book with special insert

A table of contents organizes this study into the daily rhythm of reading a picture book, watching a video (or two), and completing an activity. There are also daily short paragraphs of background information to provide deeper understanding of the picture book.

This 31-page cultural unit study is perfect for but not limited to ages 5-11. Yes, you can use this with multiple age groups at once! I started studying countries this way with four children ranging from ages 3 to 9, and now my oldest ones are almost 11. With every study, my kids ask for more books, videos and activities!

You will receive two digital PDF downloads. This is not a physical product. The two files consist of: “Discover Ukraine: A Book A Day” and a special passport booklet.

Learn about the geography of different countries through literature. Written in an open-and-go format, this study uses multiple living picture books to learn about Ukraine. Many of the books are written by own voices or people with strong ties to the country.

The books and activities are interdisciplinary, covering multiple subjects during the course of the study. In a manner similar to unit studies, different subjects are covered that all relate to Ukraine.

This geography curriculum is written as a non-biased, non-religious study. This gives families the flexibility to view it through the lens of their own religious worldviews as they see fit. Religions and religious beliefs of people in the country are discussed, specifically the holidays of Christmas, Easter, Rosh Hashanah, and Hanukkah.

Many of the activities follow a Charlotte Mason approach. These activities include: living stories, copywork, map drawing, art study, and composer study.

Whether you read about Ukraine in the news or know someone from the country, my hope is that this study provides a cultural immersion for your students that they will always remember.
