Finally, a list of the Magic Tree House Books in order, chronologically!! With every new history topic, I’ve had to go through the whole list of Magic Tree House books to find the relevant books. Did you know there are 68 of them? (At the time of this writing, that is!) I finally made this list to get them in chronological order, and if I needed this list, I figured you might, too!

I am not going to lie, there was a time when I looked down on these thin Magic Tree House books. I didn’t think they were “literature” or “living books” and completely skipped them for my oldest twins.
Fast forward 5 years to me finding an audiobook, “Warriors in Winter” to listen to during our study of Ancient Rome. (By the way, all of the audiobooks are read aloud by the author!) I really enjoyed the historical content and the thoughtful portrayal of Marcus Aurelius.
Then, I also discovered that many of the stories have non-fiction companion books. We read through the Fact Tracker, “Warriors,” and it was a great review for our Ancient and Medieval studies.
At the time, one of my kids was ready to read easy chapter books on her own. And you know what fit the bill for practicing her reading skills? Magic Tree House.
If you’ve ever read one aloud, you might be put off by the repetitive “he said, she said.” (Did I mention there are audiobooks?) Beginner readers need that repetition of words. Think about how difficult it must be for a beginner to sound out “replied” and “asked” and other such synonyms for “said.”
Then the summer Olympics rolled around and I grabbed “Hour of the Olympics” and the Fact Tracker “Ancient Greece and the Olympics.” Delightful!

Audiobook vs Physical Book
I like how Mary Pope Osborne has recorded the audiobooks herself–it’s always a nice touch when it’s the author reading to you!
But I try to also check out the physical book. Here’s why:
- My kids like the illustrations in the physical books
- The kids can read the text as the audiobook is playing
- The extra information in the endnotes is not recorded in the audiobook. Osborne often gives additional insight into the historical time period or historical figures mentioned in her books. The kids will usually ask, “Was so-and-so a real person?” Voila, we open the book to the end and the information is right there!
Numbering and Renumbering the Books
The Magic Tree House books were originally numbered this way:
- #1-28 Original books
- #29-56 Merlin Mission Books: These are longer books. In the Merlin Missions, Jack and Annie are doing a series of missions for Merlin the magician. (You do not have to read them in order.)
- #57-68 New adventures, back to the shorter format
In 2017, the books were re-numbered so that the longer Merlin Mission books have been relabeled “Merlin Mission 1-27.”
But the original, shorter books kept their numbers #1-27, and the short-format books #57-68 were renumbered starting at #29.
For example, the Merlin Mission, Dragon of the Red Dawn, used to be #37 but was renumbered as “Merlin Mission #9.”
The change was probably made long enough ago to avoid any current confusion, but I mention it in case your library has any old copies where the numbers on the covers don’t match up! Just make sure the titles match, and you are good to go!
