Magic Tree House: Hour of the Olympics

It is so much fun to find books in the Magic Tree House series that match our topics! My 7 and 9 year olds really enjoyed the story and pictures. Jack and Annie go back to Ancient Greece during the Olympics.

Magic Tree House Fact Tracker: Ancient Greece and the Olympics

We watched the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris while reading through these books. It was nice to compare the two. Check out this blog post featuring picture books about Olympic athletes.

D’Aulaires’ Book of Greek Myths

A favorite book of mine from childhood, the kids read through these Greek myths on their own.

Theras and His Town

We were able to form a clear picture of the differences between the ancient greek cultures of Athens and Sparta. This book was well worth the read!

Alexander the Great Rocks the World

I read this book aloud over the course of a few weeks. We enjoyed the writing and illustrations.

The Heroes

Telling the stories of Perseus, the Argonauts, and Theseus, we followed the slow-reading schedule recommended by AmblesideOnline. You can also find this book online for free.

The Children’s Homer

This book also took me months to read aloud to my younger children, but we enjoyed it immensely. It tells the stories of the Trojan War and The Odyssey. This author, Padraic Column, also wrote The Golden Fleece, which I enjoyed as a kid. This year, I had my 7th grade twins read his book of Celtic mythology and I also have his book of Norse myths to read aloud next year.

Greek Myths and Mazes made the stories of the Odyssey even more interesting. My 7 and 9 year olds did the oversized mazes that featured stories from the Odyssey, as well as other stories that they saw in the D’Aulaires’ Book of Greek Myths.
