We followed “Rome to the Reformation” by My Father’s World. These Ancient Rome books really transported us back to that era!

The Roman Empire

This book provides lots of ideas for crafting and dioramas. We learned so much from it over the course of 12 weeks.

Magic Tree House: Warriors in Winter

This was the book that really changed my mind about the Magic Tree House series. I didn’t take them that seriously before, but this story was very touching! We learned about Emperor Marcus Aurelius through this story.

We also looked at Magic Tree House Fact Tracker: Ancient Rome and Pompeii for background information and even an introduction to Latin!

I Survived: The Destruction of Pompeii, 79 AD

(Now that I’m looking at my photo, I see that “The Black Death” is not from the Ancient Roman period. I’ll fix that and repost.

The I Survived series does a great job putting us in the shoes of kids who survive natural disasters. This one was about the explosion of Mt Vesuvius and destruction of the Ancient Roman town of Pompeii.

I have other books recommended to learn about Pompeii in my “Discover Italy: A Book A Day” country study.

Detectives in Togas and Mystery of the Roman Ransom

If you need something fun and slightly silly, this duo of Ancient Rome books is for you. The same characters are in both, but it is possible to read the second book without having read the first. My kids thought they were great!

The Bronze Bow

And if you need something to make you cry, this book is for you. A story of a Jewish boy whose father has been killed by the Romans, our protagonist must choose between hatred and forgiveness. Will meeting Jesus change him?

I liked this book so much that I bought it AFTER we had finished reading it. Just so we could have it in our library.

Twice Freed

Set after the resurrection of Jesus, Patricia St. John takes the characters from the book of Philemon in the Bible. This is a beautiful story of slavery and redemption in Ancient Rome.
